Creating the Labyrinth at the Ropewalk Community Garden, Southampton

The Ropewalk Community Garden in Newtown, Southampton, commissioned a custom-designed seven circuit Cretan labyrinth to weave around an impressive metal sculpture in the centre of the garden. This labyrinth was painted onto the tarmac using outdoor paint designed for hard surfaces.

^ This is the unique Cretan labyrinth design for the Ropewalk Community Garden.

^ The circuits were marked out in chalk then overlaid with small white paint ‘dabs’.

^ Card stencils were made that would create a twisted rope effect on the ground.

^ A bright paint colour was chosen. The paint is dabbed into the stencil over the white paint spots.

^ This labyrinth has 45cm path widths and is 9m x 8m, to fit in the space available. It takes three minutes to walk into the centre of the labyrinth.

^ The labyrinth is complete. It wraps around the existing sculpture feature. The way into the labyrinth is pointing towards the main entrance.
